Before Offering Dental Sedation

If you plan to offer sedation as an option for patients in your dental office, there are certain classes and certifications that you need to have. Everyone who will administer the medication should be certified. Most community colleges offer courses that you and your employees can take so that you learn about the proper methods of administering conscious sedation. When you begin pursuing your conscious sedation certification for dentists, you should keep in mind that there are several hours that you will need to devote to studying and taking tests. You’ll spend about 60 hours taking the coursework before taking the final exam.

One of the things that you will learn in the course is how to include conscious sedation in your dental office. You will learn about the importance of this kind of sedation as well as the benefits and the risks. The proper way to obtain a medical history and learn about any allergies will be reviewed. There are often regulations that you will need to learn about pertaining to the requirements set forth by the state. You will learn about the impacts of conscious sedation and some of the common medications that are used with this type of anesthesia.

While taking the course, you will learn about some of the emergencies that could occur with the sedation procedure while also learning about how to direct others in the office to react to emergencies. You will learn about how to manage the person’s airway and the flow rate of the medication given for sedation. Most of the time, you can take a course online as well as the tests that are required. However, there are some lectures and clinical work that you will need to do in person so that you have a firm grasp on conscious sedation for your office.
