LASIK is the laser surgery performed on patients eyes. It is a method used to fix the patient’s sight. Using lasers in medicine it means that this is the latest outburst of technology. It wasn’t always like this actually. Medicine and surgery were quite different back in the day.
History shows that surgery was performed on patients even before Christ. Thousands of years ago archeologists found proof about archaic people doing very complex operations. We don’t know about the rate of success, but we do know that some of these people that underwent the surgery lived on after that. See more about history of surgery here.
They used rocks and sharp knives and even performed brain operations. Even today, the human brain is the most complex and unknown organ for scientists. Surgeons take serious precautions and explain the complexity of the operation they’re about to make. Brain surgery was and still is a difficult job. However, proof says that people survived these surgeries even back then.
Things changed in the 20th century. With the rise of technology and discovering new inventions, doctors were having a much easier time performing the operations. Especially after World War I and World War II, technology went so much forward that patients always hoped no matter the problem.
Vaccines were a revolution of their own. Between the 1930s and the 1970s, scientists invented vaccines for diseases that used to kill more than 10 million people each year. This is something that made some diseases completely vanish from the face of the Earth.
Then, computers came. They helped the staff working in hospitals to handle problems a lot faster. Not just from the bureaucracy aspect. Scientists and computer developers invented machines that help medical staff in different areas. Scanners using magnets, x-rays, and a whole list of other possibilities that were not possible before. All this changed medicine forever. Now doctors can easily diagnose the problem and decide whether the patient just need therapy or surgery is inevitable. When it comes to the surgery, some surgeons use computers and microscopes combined to enter inside the tiniest parts of the human body and find a solution for any problem.
However, probably the pick in today’s technology is the laser technology that is being used for surgery. LASIK is a method by which the surgeon first carefully makes a hole in the cornea of the eye. Then, the laser works on the tissue of the eye and removes tiny particles that are creating the problem. When this is all done, the cornea goes back to its place.
Following the operation, the patients struggle to see and feel disoriented but this passes pretty fast. The following time of a few weeks after the surgery, the patients must use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops to prevent further complications.
Can you imagine this? Someone picking inside your eye? This wasn’t possible before because the human eye is so fragile that no tool is small …
