3 Tips to Help Your Child Stay Safe at Camp

Sending your child off to camp can be a scary experience if you are a parent. In some cases, it may be the first time your child has been away from home for an extended period of time. To help prepare your child for camp in a way that will keep him or her safe, consider the tips listed below.

Communicate With Counselors

Go out of your way to establish a line of communication between yourself and the camp counselors. Confirm that your child’s file will provide the camp director with a way of reaching you in case anything happens. You can also make sure that your child’s file lists any relevant medical concerns that camp counselors should be aware of. For children with notable medical histories, consider having him or her wear a medical information bracelet so that first responders will have quick access to relevant medical history.

Teach Safe Practices

Make sure your child is aware of general safety rules, such as staying with the group when going on outdoor adventures together and being mindful of environmental hazards. If your child is going to a camp that places an emphasis on outdoor hiking, consider taking your child camping to teach him or her the basics of outdoor safety.

Prepare for Independence

If you are sending your child to a camp experience that lasts several weeks, make sure your child is prepared for the distance. Help familiarize your child with the experience of being away from home for an extended period of time by allowing your child to attend weekend sleepovers or signing your child up for a shorter camp experience, such as one that lasts a week.

Through preparation and attentiveness, you can help ensure that your child will be safe during his or her time away at camp.
