Health Matters: UT Doctors care centre treats Turner Syndrome

Turner Syndrome is a unusual chromosomal issue that impacts 1 in 2,000 women of all ages.

HOUSTON — This Sunday is Uncommon Disease Day which is devoted to increasing consciousness about some of these circumstances and the effects it has on patients’ lives.

For instance, Charity Watson has lived her total existence with a genetic condition identified as Turner Syndrome.

“Actually I was diagnosed back again in March of 1977 when I was all of 13 months outdated,” Watson said. “It’s really hard for me to have faith in new health professionals, specially since you just really don’t know. Very well, what do they know about Turner Syndrome? What do they have an understanding of?”

Dr. Siddharth Prakash with UT Physicians and associate professor of interior medicine at UTHealth’s McGovern Medical College stated Turner Syndrome is a unusual chromosomal ailment that influences 1 in 2,000 women.

Girls identified with it are born with 1 or aspect of a person X chromosome instead of two.

Dr. Prakash said they are usually shorter than other women and go through from heart problems.

“They have abnormal enlargement of blood vessels,” he claimed. “They can have missing or further blood vessels and they can have congenital coronary heart flaws.”

Dr. Prakash treats Watson. He claimed she experienced an abnormal heart valve and an aortic aneurysm.

“She underwent a great deal of screening, and the good news is, we have been able to come across her aneurysm in time to have it repaired surgically,” Dr. Prakash stated.

Dr. Michelle Rivera is the co-director of the treatment middle and concentrates on pediatrics.
