How Patients Use Cannabis to Treat Their Medical Condition

More than half the states in the U.S., as well as the District of Columbia, have legalized the use of medical marijuana, and more are planning to do the same. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved marijuana treatment for Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. Although the agency did agree to support additional research on the use of marijuana, they’re still limiting its use for medical purposes.

Basic facts about medical marijuana

Medical marijuana uses a marijuana plant to treat specific kinds of diseases or conditions. It’s like recreational marijuana but taken for medicinal purposes. What’s great about the marijuana plant is that it has over 100 various chemicals that affect the body in different ways.

Medical marijuana is an excellent solution to a few conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. It’s used to treat epilepsy and glaucoma, too. Moreover, it’s also used to treat specific mental states such as PTSD and schizophrenia.

But the most significant benefit that cannabis can bring to a patient is its ability to ease chronic pain. It can also reduce vomiting and nausea that occurs during chemotherapy and spasticity.

Patients can get medical marijuana from a medical dispensary in Tulsa or other places that carry it for medicinal purposes. The patient needs a written recommendation from a licensed doctor in the state where marijuana is legal. The patient also needs to have a condition that uses cannabis as an alternative form of treatment.

Every state has its list of health conditions that you can check to ensure that you’re eligible for it. Your state may also need you to get a medical marijuana ID card for validation. Once you have it, you can buy it from any dispensary that carries it.

You can take medical marijuana in various ways. Most people smoke it or use a vaporizer to inhale it. Meanwhile, others eat edibles that contain hemp while others apply it on their skin. How you take it is up to you.

But keep in mind that each method has its way of working in your body. Vaporizing or smoking cannabis can help you feel the effects. Meanwhile, eating it takes at least one to two hours to experience its effects.

The difference between CBD and medical marijuana

Unlike CBD, you need to enroll in states programs that require a physician or a doctor to certify that your condition qualifies for the program. Also, it also contains THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, which is an active chemical that has psychoactive effects to its users.

In contrast, CBD comes from hemp, which is a different cannabis plant that’s no longer considered as a Schedule I drug. WebMD says that you can also buy these hemp-based CBD oils online and other retail stores.

There are a more significant number of patients who have tried hemp CBD but didn’t get similar results when they take medical marijuana. That’s why they often go back to using medical cannabis. So, if you’re going to use medical cannabis as an alternative form of treatment, then it’s best to consult your physician about it.
