New Delhi: As India marks the 7th International Yoga Day with the theme “Yoga for well-being” that highlights the importance of practicing yoga, Banega Swasth India team speaks to experts – Yoga trainer Susheel Jain and Yoga expert Deepika Mehta to know all about the benefits of practicing Yoga for a healthy lifestyle.

Explaining the three basic breathing exercises that one can do every day at home to improve their respiratory health, Yoga trainer Susheel Jain said,
One can practice, abdominal breathing exercise, wherein you practice simple inhale and exhale. Do it for 5 minutes daily. Second exercise is Anulom Vilom pranayama or alternate nostril breathing, which involves holding one nostril closed while inhaling, then holding the other nostril closed while exhaling. The process is reversed and repeated. One should do it 8-10 times for about 3-5 minutes. Lastly, there is Bhramari Pranayama also known as Humming Bee Breath, in this asana, one simply inhale and then while exhaling make a humming sound.
Talking about who all can perform these basic three asanas and the precautions one need to take, Susheel Jain added,
Anyone can perform these three asanas, the key is to do it very slowly.

Explaining the benefits of Yoga, Yoga expert Deepika Mehta said,
There is something amazing about Yoga. Yoga doesn’t need any equipment, nor it requires one to go to a gym, it just require one simple corner and a mat and you can do so much. It just works using your own body. More importantly, Yoga help improves your immunity and respiratory systems. It’s also proven by science that it has incredible benefits in case of anxiety, depression or stress. Yoga helps calm your mind.
Further explaining how Yoga helps, Ms Mehta added,
Yoga help stimulates good chemicals in the body like Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is a chemical in the brain that helps in slow down excessive thinking. It also produces serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, basically all the happy hormones, which make you feel good.
Highlighting some of the basic asanas that one can do sitting at home and improve their breathing, Deepika Mehta added,
Start with basic breathing exercises like abdominal breathing or simply breathing to your belly, in which you simply practice inhale and exhale. You can start this exercise by sitting in any posture, you can do this 10 times a day. For people who are stressed out or have problem sleeping, this has proven to be very beneficial. The one pranayama that which has caught a lot of attention for helping people all over the world in COVID-19 is called Bhramari Pranayama because it produces nitric oxide and helps reduce the symptoms of COVID-19. It is simply an inhale/exhale exercise, but in this, after inhalation, one exhale out with a humming sound.

Signing off with a special Yoga Day message, Ms Mehta said,
Celebrate everyday as Yoga day. COVID-19 pandemic has shown everyone how important our health really is, so one really needs to make health the top most priority. Spend just 10 minutes on breathing exercise daily, pay attention to what you are eating, avoid processed food. Take simple home cooked meals, they are the best. Cut down on your screen time, and lastly spend some time daily in the sun. If you will do these simple things, you will see the positive effects.
NDTV – Dettol Banega Swasth India campaign is an extension of the five-year-old Banega Swachh India initiative helmed by Campaign Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan. It aims to spread awareness about critical health issues facing the country. In wake of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the need for WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) is reaffirmed as handwashing is one of the ways to prevent Coronavirus infection and other diseases. The campaign highlights the importance of nutrition and healthcare for women and children to prevent maternal and child mortality, fight malnutrition, stunting, wasting, anaemia and disease prevention through vaccines. Importance of programmes like Public Distribution System (PDS), Mid-day Meal Scheme, POSHAN Abhiyan and the role of Aganwadis and ASHA workers are also covered. Only a Swachh or clean India where toilets are used and open defecation free (ODF) status achieved as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, can eradicate diseases like diahorrea and become a Swasth or healthy India. The campaign will continue to cover issues like air pollution, waste management, plastic ban, manual scavenging and sanitation workers and menstrual hygiene.
